I am so excited to work with the 5/6 class this year! Monthly classroom newsletters will be sent home to inform you about learning and other activities that will take place in our class each month. Daily information and upcoming events will also continue to be sent home in our planners as well as in our Daily Report Cards and TWAS. (This Week At School). Below you will find some information relating to our classroom, daily routines, and activities.
STUDENT PLANNERS: As mentioned in our class letter that was sent home at Meet the Teacher/first day of school, using our planners daily is part of our regular home-school communication. Notices and information will also be tucked into the agenda so please look for it as soon as your child gets home from school. Homework and reminders will be recorded in the planner as well. Students are encouraged to show you their agenda each day and complete any assignments. I ask that you sign the agenda each day and ensure your child has the agenda in their backpack each morning.
Daily Report Card/TWAS: At the end of each school day, the grade 5/6 students complete a daily self-assessment in regards to how their day went and if they worked towards their weekly goal during the day. At the end of the week the students will also write a paragraph or two sharing the things they learned, experienced and did throughout the week (TWAS). Over the weekend, please encourage your child to share their daily report and TWAS with you. Please sign it and ensure it comes back to school at the beginning of each week.
WATER BOTTLES: Keeping hydrated is important to good health and I have told the children they may bring a water bottle to school to leave on their desk. ~If you wish to send a water bottle to school, please ensure it is a NON-SPILLABLE bottle (ie with a popup top) so that the water cannot dump easily if it is knocked over.
HOME READING PROGRAM: As stated in the Home Reading Letter sent home during the first week of school, I believe an at-home reading program is extremely important for a child’s success in school. I expect the children to read aloud, or silently, for 15-20 minutes each day. ~Please record your child’s reading each evening in their planner.
Word Work: As stated in our Word Work Program letter, the grade 5/6’s use an Individualized Spelling Program for our Word Work. This allows the students to focus on word lists that are best suited for their learning level. Students will have at least two weeks to complete a unit. When a Unit is due, sufficient notice will be recorded in the planner.
LIBRARY: We have library book exchange on Day 1. Please help your child to remember to return library books on that day.
